About us...

Our first show was held in 1871 and consisted of little more than stock displays and a ploughing match, where local farmers furrowed a paddock near Dunn’s Bridge, Balaklava with great gusto, vying for prizes totalling £25.

 

By 1875, digging matches were added to the “sports of the day”, while horse shoeing competitions were also keenly contested in future years.

 

A far cry from today’s carnival atmosphere, with its side shows and rides, it was, nonetheless, a popular feature on the community calendar. In fact, the Adelaide Advertiser reported in 1879 that “a better (show) is rarely or ever seen outside of Adelaide”.

 

An annual event in Balaklava, South Australia, our one day show is a well attended event, greatly anticipated by the local and surrounding farming communities.  The variety of Sections generates interest from all ages; men, women and children and showcases the skills and interests of people from many areas, as well as the farming production of the Wakefield Plains district.

 

With sideshow alley and a variety of stall holders (both indoors and outside), food vendors, static displays, and a variety of entertainment, there is something for everyone at the Balaklava Show.

 

Horses in Action are held on the oval during the show on the Saturday.
